American Curly Eared Cat

In a nutshell, the American Curl is a cat with a pair of adorable “mini headphones” and a social heart. They will greet you cheerfully when you walk in the door or rub your feet as you go about your business. Their love of children and friendliness with other pets makes them a natural fit for your family. Those rich colors and patterns in the pictures, as well as the different kinds of long and short coats, are the signature of the American curly-eared cat. Their back coats are virtually non-shedding and their topcoats are as soft and smooth as silk. In addition, their long luxurious tails will undoubtedly catch your attention. What’s particularly interesting is that American curly-eared cats with large curly ears are often reserved as show cats, while their compatriots with smaller curly ears are usually chosen as family cuties.

As for their origins, all of the breed’s bloodlines come from “Shulamith,” a stray in Lakewood, California, who found her home there in 1981, had her babies six months later, and then the cats and kittens got their distinctive curly ears like their mom’s. By 1983, selective breeding of these cats began and it was discovered that the gene that gave these cats and kittens their curly ears was inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, which meant that all a cat needed was one of that gene to have unique ears.
