Hey cat lovers! Let’s explore an extraordinarily unique breed, the American Curl.
In a nutshell, the American Curl is a cat with a pair of adorable “mini headphones” and a social heart. They will greet you cheerfully when you walk in the door or rub your feet as you go about your business. Their love of children and friendliness with other pets makes them a natural fit for your family. Those rich colors and patterns in the pictures, as well as the different kinds of long and short coats, are the signature of the American curly-eared cat. Their back coats are virtually non-shedding and their topcoats are as soft and smooth as silk. In addition, their long luxurious tails will undoubtedly catch your attention. What’s particularly interesting is that American curly-eared cats with large curly ears are often reserved as show cats, while their compatriots with smaller curly ears are usually chosen as family cuties.
As for their origins, all of the breed’s bloodlines come from “Shulamith,” a stray in Lakewood, California, who found her home there in 1981, had her babies six months later, and then the cats and kittens got their distinctive curly ears like their mom’s. By 1983, people were beginning to see the American Curly Ears in their homes. By 1983, selective breeding of these cats began and it was discovered that the gene that gave these cats and kittens their curly ears was inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, which meant that all a cat needed was one of that gene to have unique ears. Since learning about the American curly-eared cat, their distinctive appearance, healthy body, and friendly personality have made them an instantly popular breed choice.
They have an elegant, lean stature, muscular svelte body, and exude the beauty of lines all over. Generally, female cats weigh between 5 and 8 pounds, and male cats weigh between 7 and 10 pounds. Their heads are wedge-shaped, slightly longer than wide, and their noses are of medium length, straight and slightly rising. You must have noticed that their ears! They are iconic in shape curling backward at a minimum angle of 90 degrees and can reach a maximum of 180 degrees. Moreover, the ears are wide and open at the base, and the tips of the ears are ticking and flexible. The two “mini stereo headphones” are placed evenly on both sides of the head, ideally with earrings. Can’t wait to adopt one of these friendly and distinctive cats?
